AUSTRIA_bandiera coin Austria 10 euro commemorative 2013 "Wachau, NIEDERÖSTERREICH" fdc

dedicated to the Austrian region of NIEDERÖSTERREICH - copper metal - weight 14.9 g - diameter 32 mm km3221

Located in the north-east of the country, Nieder Österreich is the immediate hinterland of Vienna and the largest province of Austria. A place where industry and agriculture coexist, but also boasts areas of exquisite natural beauty, no more than Wachau. Here, under the terraced vineyards, the ruined castles and the ancient monasteries, the mighty Danube is one of the most spectacular river valleys in the world. UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the perfect centerpiece of the third 10-euro copper coin in our superb Austria Piece by Piece series.

The reverse of the coin features a typical Wachau river scene of a ferry crossing the Melk monastery, the ancient city gate of Krems and the Baroque church of Dürnstein, the village where the famous king Richard the Lionheart of England was famous prisoner in the 12th century. Celebrating the nine provinces of Austria, each coin in the series also reproduces the winning design of a competition in which pupils were asked to draw their own province. The reverse side of the coin, cleverly designed by Ertl's ten-year-old Christian Kopf, shows the four districts of the province: wine, industry, wood and must (fruit juice).
