Austria coin 10 euro commemorative 2014 "Tyrol" fdc
dedicated to the Austrian region of Tyrol, Tirol - copper metal - weight 14.9 g - diameter 32 mm km3235
No other Austrian province resounds outside Austria like the Tyrol. Its famous feathered hats are partly responsible for it; as well as its mountaintop peaks, which captured the imagination of the world during the 1976 Winter Olympics in the provincial capital, Innsbruck. For many of those peaks it is the archetype of the Austrian landscape, but Tyrol is much more than that. Immersed in culture, it is the third largest province of Austria and the only one divided into two parts, the North and East Tyrol. The sixth coin of our educational series Austria Piece by Piece, which was co-designed by the children of the village school, celebrates this enchanting land.
A folk dance festival recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage is represented in intricate details on the obverse of the coin. Known as the "Telfer Schleicherlaufen", the festival takes place every five years in the city of Telfs and is famous for its distinctive hats. Telfs is shown in the background lying under a bumpy peak, while the alpine theme continued on the reverse side of the coin in the winning collage of the school competition to co-design the coin. In its center, next to other famous Tyrolean symbols, there is a different type of headgear - what else but a Tyrolean hat!
