Joan of Arc (in French Jeanne d'Arc, in medium French Jehanne Darc; Domrémy, about 1412 [2] [3] [4] [5] [N 1] - Rouen, 30 May 1431) is a national hero French, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church, today also known as "the pulzella d'Orléans" (in French "la pucelle d'Orléans").
He brought together, in his own country, part of the territory fallen into the hands of the British, helping to revive its fate during the Hundred Years War, victoriously guiding the French armies against the English armies. Captured by the Burgundians before Compiègne, Giovanna was sold to the British. These subjected her to a trial for heresy, at the end of which, on May 30, 1431, she was sentenced to the stake and burned alive.
In 1456 Pope Callisto III, at the end of a second investigation, declared the nullity of this process.
Beatified in 1909 by Pius X and canonized in 1920 by Benedict XV, Giovanna was proclaimed patroness of France.
