pink and purple - Kate Cranston - Squirrels - In 1878 Miss Kate Cranston opened her first tea room, the Crown Luncheon Room, on Argyle Street, Glasgow - Kate Cranston set the standard in Glasgow for more welcoming establishments. The rooms were reserved only for women and only for gentlemen, as were the dining rooms where they could dine together and the smoking rooms and the billiard rooms for the gentlemen. Miss Cranston's tea rooms became social centers for all, for businessmen and apprentices, for ladies and maids. The Ladies Rooms have been a particular success, recently allowing respectable women to hang out and meet without male company. Unlike cafes or tea rooms in other cities, there was no intrusive supervision and those taking the tea had an assortment of scones in hand, with a discreet notice reminding newcomers to remember the quantity consumed. In "accounting", Glasgow in 1901 reported: "One declares the amount of one's debts and receives a check from the waitress. This, with the corresponding coin or coins, is delivered to the cashier, and so on at home. Nothing could be simpler. or less irritating. "
The city was a center of artistic innovation at the time and the tea rooms served as art galleries for the "Glasgow Boys" paintings.
