Benedict Arnold (Norwich, 30 October 1741 - London, 14 June 1801) was an American general during the War of Independence who betrayed the revolutionary cause in 1780 and entered the British camp.
Valiant and aggressive fighter, Arnold proved to be an able and determined commander in the early years of the war, making a decisive contribution to the successes of the continental army, especially during the Saratoga campaign which was won by the rebels largely thanks to him.
Despite the brilliant service, Benedict Arnold, ambitious and controversial, came into conflict with his colleagues and finally decided to betray the independence cause and to move into the British army by guiding loyalist troops in Virginia in the last years of the war and showing great animosity towards his old comrades in arms.
